Training Description

This class sequence will provide required training for access and use of the FEDC Fabrication and Artisan shops.

  • What PPE and personal attire is required for the Fabrication Center?
  • If you cut yourself in the shop, what should you do?
  • In the event that someone gets something embedded in their eye (chip or splinter), what should you do?
  • How many First Aid kits are in the Fabrication Center?
  • The four simple steps for operating a fire extinguisher can be remembered with the word PASS. Pull, Activate, Squeeze, Sweep.
  • How many fire extinguishers are located in the Fabrication Center?
  • Safety glasses may be removed in the Fabrication Center when the student is not actively working on equipment.
  • What are acceptable uses for personal electronic equipment (cell phones, MP3’s, cameras)?
  • What is the policy for students cleaning up their work areas?
  • Students should never take their hand off the draw bar wrench until the wrench is removed from the draw bar.
  • What is the correct way to lift heavy fixtures?
  • Students should always remove the chuck wrench from chuck immediately after using.
  • You can grab chips and turnings from the lathe and remove them by hand while the machine is operating.
  • If a student does not know how to perform a lathe operation, who should they ask for help?
  • What materials cannot be cut on the Saw Stop table saw?
  • What should be used to feed material into the saw for small cuts?
  • You do not have to wear safety glasses when operating the radial arm saw.
  • How many pieces of wood can you cross cut at a time on the chop saw?
  • When can scrap wood be removed from the radial arm saw?
  • You should never put your fingers close to the band saw blade while the machine is running.
  • What is appropriate attire for welding and plasma cutting operations?
  • Unsafe practice or obvious abuse of equipment constitutes a danger to people and damages equipment. Therefore the Fabrication Shop Manager or any person observing an unsafe act should stop unsafe practices in the Fabrication Shop. Students violating any of these rules will have their Fabrication Shop privileges revoked for a period of at least two weeks. Longer periods may be assessed, depending upon the judgment of the Fabrication Shop Manager and the FEDC Manager.

Differential tuition pays for enhancements to the learning experience of undergraduate students in engineering. These enhancements include extra sections of overfull courses, new computers and equipment, and even extra lecturers to teach classes. Learn more about differential tuition here.
