Here you may submit a request to have an item manufactured or altered using the below listed processes.

  • You will have the option to select if this is an “Academic” request or an “Engineering Service Center” request
    • Academic requests require access to the FEDC and are for Engineering academic course projects or Engineering lab requirements
    • Engineering Service Center Requests (research/billable projects) are for graduate student work, PI (Principal Investigator) funded research, and departmental/college requests
  • A part file must be uploaded in one of the forms listed below
    • Fabrication must be one of the following in the form of a ‘zip’ file: CAD part ( .sldpart, ipt, .f3ds) or drawing file (.slddrw, .idw)
    •  Prototyping/ 3D printing must be “.stl” less than 5mb
    • PCB must be a single zip file of top layer, bottom layer (two sided only), outline, and drill file.
    •  Laser Cutting must be ‘.dwg’ or ‘zip’ file.

File Upload Instructions

The fabrication request must be in a self-contained zip file with your first and last name.

All fabrication requests require both a part file and a drawing file. Your file should contain 3 views of your part with the appropriate dimensions.

Dimensions must be in inches.

Multiple part files can be placed in the same folder. Quantities need to be included in the drawing, otherwise, one is assumed. A simple one-page materials list with quantities of items that should be included in your request has multiple parts.

Part file examples:

  • .sldpart (SolidWorks)
  • .ipt (Inventer)
  • .f3ds (Fusion)

Drawing file examples:

  • .slddrw (SolidWorks)
  • .idw (Inventer)

These types are also acceptable: / .sldasm / .step / .iges / .igs / .dwg

STL and DXF files are not allowed

Make sure to save the file as your name, the file number, and the date submitted. Zip files should be uploaded as "[Customer name]_[File Name]_[Part numner].zip". Please follow the example on how to name your zip file. E.g. JimboFisher _Partname_0812
Accepted file types: zip, zip, Max. file size: 5 MB.

3D Printing

We offer Low Fidelity and High Fidelity 3D printing services. Our default selection is Low Fidelity using PLA material; any other selection will require an engineering explanation/justification. For more information on our many print technologies and machines, including a breakdown of the FEDC allotments and costs for service, please visit our Wiki page.

Please indicate why you will need your part to be created in a material other than PLA. This could be because of heat resistance, tensile strength, durability, etc.

                          PCB

The Fischer Engineering Design Center provides 2 different services

The following styles can be requested:

                          • Standard: traces can be a minimum of 1 mm, and all spacing must be at least 2 mm. We will only outline traces, pads, etc.; no full rub-outs of copper from the PCB. Aim is for 3-day turnaround maximum (depending on queue).
                          • Non-Standard: traces can be as thin as 0.5 mm and 0.5 mm spacing between components allowed. Full rub-outs available upon request. Turnaround is greater than one week (depending on queue) and material cost can be up to three times greater. Engineering justification required.
The FEDC cannot do thru-hole plating but we do tin each board.

                          Board Style*
Select your board type. The type selected affects how long it will take for your request to be fulfilled. Note: If you are requesting a single-layer PCB you will only need to provide the drill file, the board outline and the top/bottom layer with the traces.
Add a description of the requested board and its intended function so the technicians can best verify the design.
You may now ZIP all of the files generated from your ECAD software into one upload. Be sure to include the following: • Top layer or .GTL • Bottom layer or .GBL (only if two-sided) • Outline or .GKO • NC drill files or .DRL
Accepted file types: zip, Max. file size: 5 MB.

                          Laser Cutting & Engraving Request

The FEDC does not supply the material for laser cutting. You must provide your own material, labeled with your FIRST and LAST name, to the ZACH 111 Part Drop-Off Shelf. Occasionally, the FEDC does have small quantities of scrap material available for student use – please ask our team for details.

The link below will take you to a downloadable version of the FEDC AutoCad Template used by our technicians to prepare and cut your designs and drawings. In order to lessen confusion or miscommunication, please consider placing and adjusting your drawing within this template, then save as [FirstName_LastName_FileName].dwg
